190 years of Waldhausen – a year to celebrate!

Bit Range from Waldhausen:

More Quality, Modern Design, Perfect Fit

The Waldhausen bit range impresses with modern anatomical shapes, clearly defined bit thicknesses, and high-quality materials. With thicknesses from 14 mm up to size 12.5 cm and 16 mm from 13.5 cm, it offers a modern, horse-friendly solution for different mouth sizes.

The Bit Materials

The bits are made from carefully selected materials. Stainless steel bits impress with durability, neutral taste, and particularly easy maintenance. Cyprium bits consist of a high-quality copper-zinc alloy, which develops a warm, slightly sweet taste. Sweet Iron bits, made from special steel, promote chewing and salivation through natural oxidation. Each material naturally supports the horse in accepting the bit and contributes to a relaxed, active acceptance.

Stainless Steel

Classic, Durable, and Neutral in Taste

Material

  • Standard Stainless Steel

Properties

  • Very hard and extremely durable
  • High corrosion resistance – rust-free and easy to maintain
  • Neutral taste, does not affect the horse’s mouth sensorily
  • Very smooth surface for optimal gliding in the horse’s mouth
  • Efficient production allows an attractive price-performance ratio

Effect & Benefits in the Horse’s Mouth

  • Stimulates saliva flow only minimally
  • Sits quietly and stably in the mouth
  • Particularly suitable for horses that prefer taste-neutral bits

Classic

Allrounder: Classic snaffle with loose / continuous rings that applies direct pressure on the tongue, bars, and corners of the mouth; very common, relatively “soft,” and therefore often suitable for training and everyday use. Loose rings allow the rein aids to be transmitted gently through slight movement of the ring.

Anatomical

The anatomical snaffle is also a snaffle, but the mouthpiece is specially shaped to better fit the horse’s natural mouth shape. This distributes pressure more evenly over the tongue and bars, and the effect follows the shape of the horse’s mouth – which many horses find more comfortable.

Lock-Up

A lock-up bit combines elements of a double-jointed snaffle with a special mechanism. Under stronger rein pressure or the horse’s resistance, it behaves more like a straight bar, creating more even pressure distribution. As soon as the horse yields, this effect is immediately released.

Stainless Steel Bits – Economic

The Economic stainless steel bits are available in 16 mm and as pony bits in 14 mm – providing a comfortable mouthfeel at the usual attractive entry-level price.

Cyprium

For Acceptance and Contact

Material

  • High-quality copper-zinc alloy with increased copper content
  • Main component is red copper, complemented by a small amount of white copper
  • Side parts made of 100% stainless steel

Properties

  • Pleasant warm taste for the horse
  • Promotes saliva production – the horse foams more and becomes noticeably more chewing-active
  • Slightly sweet-metallic taste, well accepted by many horses

Effect and Benefits in the Mouth

  • Supports a softer, more trusting approach to the bit
  • Encourages acceptance and a consistent, harmonious contact
  • Particularly suitable for young horses or horses that have been reluctant or hesitant to accept the bit

Sweet Iron

To Activate Chewing and Saliva Production

Material

  • Special steel
  • Side parts made of 100% stainless steel

Properties

  • Oxidation creates a pleasant, slightly sweet taste
  • Many horses find this taste enjoyable and accept the bit more quickly and actively

Effect and Benefits in the Horse’s Mouth

  • Oxidation stimulates chewing and saliva production
  • Can promote relaxation in the lower jaw
  • Supports a lighter, softer approach to the bit

Rubber

Soft, Horse-Friendly, and Comfortable in the Mouth

Material

  • Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) with rubber-elastic properties
  • Side parts made of 100% stainless steel

Properties

  • Soft and elastic material – especially gentle on the mouth
  • Pleasant, slightly tacky surface for a soft mouthfeel
  • Requires sufficient natural saliva flow, as the material itself hardly stimulates salivation
  • Temperature-insensitive – remains comfortable even in cold conditions
  • A natural wear due to material softness
→ Increased abrasion possible under heavy use
→ More pronounced with incorrect bit positioning or strong chewing behavior

Effect and Benefits in the Horse’s Mouth

  • Very soft and gentle on the tongue and bars
  • Can promote relaxation in the lower jaw
  • Can encourage acceptance of the bit
  • Suitable for sensitive horses with sufficient natural saliva flow
