TARA Tierhilfe e.V. is an animal welfare organisation based in Lohmar, North Rhine-Westphalia. The sanctuary rescues animals from difficult circumstances and offers them a permanent, safe and species-appropriate home for life. TARA Tierhilfe e.V. is more than just an animal welfare organisation; it is a place of hope.

The History of TARA Tierhilfe e.V.

The origins of TARA Tierhilfe e.V. can be traced back to the founder Ulla Fiebig’s love of animals. Even as a teenager, Ulla Fiebig was passionate about caring for animals. What began as a private initiative grew, through a great deal of dedication, into a larger farm where more and more animals were able to find a home.

The charity was finally established in 2000. From the very beginning, the aim was to help animals in need and provide them with a dignified home. With increasing support from volunteers, the project has continued to grow. Today, the original idea has become an established animal welfare charity that provides many animals with a new home.

Many of the animals have lived in very poor conditions or were rescued from the slaughterhouse. TARA Tierhilfe offers the animals a forever home and does not rehome the rescued animals. This is precisely what makes this place so special, as it gives a future to animals who would otherwise have none.

In doing so, the organisation fulfils an important role in animal welfare: it offers a long-term future and a good life, particularly to older, sick or hard-to-place animals.

A sanctuary for many animals

TARA Tierhilfe e.V. is no ordinary animal shelter. Rather than rehoming the rescued animals, the sanctuary provides a place where every animal can stay for life. Horses, ponies, donkeys, pigs, goats, chickens and ducks live side by side on the extensive pastures and lovingly designed outdoor enclosures. Over a hundred animals have found a home at the sanctuary.

Many of the animals require special care due to their age or health issues. Older horses and farm animals with health problems, in particular, have little chance of being rehomed and find their final refuge at the sanctuary, where they are lovingly cared for and supported throughout their lives.

Daily life at an animal sanctuary

Caring for the animals is not just a lot of work; it is a daily task that demands responsibility, dedication and passion. For this reason, daily life follows a clear structure, ensuring that all animals are looked after reliably and receive the care they deserve. Daily tasks include, amongst other things: feeding the animals with individually tailored feed, cleaning the stables and outdoor runs, maintaining the pastures, as well as providing veterinary care and organising medication and special feed.

None of this would be possible without the many helping hands. Around fifty people regularly give the farm their time, energy and compassion. The volunteers’ commitment makes the farm what it is and enables many animals to live a good life.

Animals with moving stories

All the animals living on the farm have a moving backstory. Most of them were rescued from appalling conditions or saved from the slaughterhouse. This is also the case for Rosi the mare, who was rescued by TARA Tierhilfe e.V. just in time to save her from the slaughterhouse. Thanks to intensive care and medical treatment, Rosi’s health and quality of life have improved significantly. She has found her forever home at TARA Tierhilfe e.V. and can now enjoy her life in peace. Rosi’s story is representative of many others. It shows how important organisations such as TARA Tierhilfe e.V. are for animals in need and for animal welfare.

Educational activities and encounters with animals

The farm is not only a sanctuary for animals, but also a place of learning and interaction. Here, animal welfare comes to life for everyone. Groups of visitors can explore the farm on guided tours. The aim is not just to see the animals, but also to develop an understanding of their needs and of animal welfare in general. Such encounters are particularly valuable for children and young people. They learn to perceive animals as sentient beings and to treat them responsibly.

How to support TARA Tierhilfe e.V.

However, the work of an animal sanctuary is also fraught with many challenges. Food, vet visits, medication and the upkeep of the premises must be continuously funded. That is why TARA Tierhilfe e.V. relies on support and donations. Every donation, every partnership, every helping hand is a huge help to the charity. Every contribution helps to ensure the animals can live a safe and dignified life.

Why sanctuaries are so important for animal welfare

Many animals in animal welfare are difficult to rehome due to old age, illness, behavioural issues or trauma. For these animals, sanctuaries are often the only chance of finding a permanent home. Such facilities therefore make an important contribution to animal welfare. They give the animals the most precious things there are: time, safety and a home.

At the same time, they create places where people and animals can come together and help to raise awareness of responsible animal care.
